  OTHER SEA KAYAKS

Other Sea Kayaks

While we're proud to carry the lines of sea kayaks from P&H, Epic, Nigel Dennis and Venture, there are many other fine kayaks, and from time to time a few will find their way into our shop.

Occasionally we will be selling boats on commission, or re-selling used boats that have come our way. Look below for details of specific boats we have in the shop.

We are also pleased to have a working relationship with Tim DeMars of Aquadisiyak Custom Watercraft. The local craftsmen and artisans produce some of the finest wood-strip kayaks available.

These unique boats are, in fact, works of art – featuring custom inlays, carvings, or the paintings of Lowcountry artist Gaye Sanders Fisher. Contact us if you'd like to discuss these custom made masterpieces.

Island Kayaks Expedition

In keeping with the traditional roots of modern sea kayaking, we present the Island Expedition. This boat will look familiar to fans of traditional kayak designs -- the hull profile is closely based on that of a kayak from the Uummannaq Fjord area of West Greenland. However, the keel line has been subtly modified to move the pivot point forward.

The moderately vee'd cross section makes for a sea-kindly hull and the slightly fuller lines fore and aft combine increased carrying loads with a more comfortable ride compared to excessive plunging associated with very fine entries and exits. The Expedition was designed by Donacha Drew, a paddler with over fifty years experience designing and paddling kayaks at sea and includes innovations that experienced paddlers will appreciate.

For instance, the kayak features finger grips molded into the glass at the bow and stern. These help ensure the boat stays in your hands and can give you more control in rough seas than traditional toggles, particularly in rescue situations. The kayaks also features carrying straps, which are fit to a recessed stainless steel fitting at bow and stern.

  • Large KS oval hatches ford and aft.
  • KS day hatch.

Skin-on-Frame Baidarka

Built locally by Bruce Lemon, this skin-on-frame Baidarka is to George Dyson's design using materials from the Dyson Baidarka Co:

Baidarka - a Dyson design

Covered with Dyson 7 oz. cloth and sealed with Dura-Tuff, this is an SoF that will stand-up to real use.Artificial (nylon) sinew is used to lash the white oak ribs to the douglas fir stringers. The coaming is white oak over fir. A light application of tung oil helps to protect the wood.

NOTE: You can learn more about the historically Aluet Baidarka design and what goes into building a SoF in modern times at the Skinboat School website.

Valley Kayaks – Pintail

The original ocean play boat. Lively and of low volume, the Pintail is most at home surfing or playing in turbulent waters. Although some say this traditional, ocean cockpit design has been superseded by the Avocet, the Pintail is still available and has many fans.

We have two used boats available a a tremendous savings. These are vintage examples of a heritage design in outstanding condition: relatively new hatch covers, bungees and deck lines compliment the Purple and Yellow decks which have been stored indoors and out of the sun.

A perfect fit for smaller paddlers, and for those who enjoy a playful, responsive boat. These fine boats have to be seen to be believed.
